We have the Sidekicks refrigerator with matching freezer bought 4 years ago. New home build with custom space for the unit. On Thanksgiving eve with the fridge full of food it stopped cooling. Discovered this on Thanksgiving day! Had to throw out all the food including the turkey. A week later finally able to get the original installer to come service the unit (freezer still working "fingers crossed "). After being told parts no longer available, magically some were found in another service truck. Paid for labor but held off paying for parts. Good thing because fridge still not cooling. Sounds like a Freon problem. Have been without fridge for seven days and counting. Wish I had read these reviews before purchasing this model. Don't have a plan yet but am extremely disappointed with Whirlpool in general and this model in particular.

Junk

This refrigerator is a piece of junk. We had to have it repaired two years after we purchased the relay went out. Whirlpool told us that we had a ten year warranty on the compressor , well two years later it stopped cooling, called repairman he said that the line is clogged on the high side whatever that means. He suggest replacing the compressor so I call whirlpool and now they are telling me there is no ten year warranty. I have called several repair shops and they have all told me that the compressor is usually has a warranty of 10 years. So somebody is lying and I don't believe its the repair shops. Our cabinets are built around the refrig so we have to either have a cap in the spot or replace with the piece of junk again. Just so you know whirlpool you suck.

Look good as pair but the Refridgerator won't last

We designed our kitchen with both all fridge and all freezer units.The first set were Woods, and the first fridge lasted 5 years, and when we had to replace it the design had changed due to the Woods brand being bought out by Whirlpool, so we had to buy both units again so that they'd match. We used the first freezer as a spare one in the basement. Second fridge lasted 4 years, and then the compressor died so we replaced it. Third fridge lasted 9 months and the compressor died, however extended warranty replaced the compressor which only lasted 1 1/2 months. I'd call that 4 fridges in less than ten years, which is very poor. Side note both Freezers are still going strong. Needless to say we are abandoning the fridge only idea and going with two combination units with left and right doors to make it look like it was designed for that. I have been told that the fridge only unit causes the compressor to cycle on and off more frequently than the combination units, thus shortening it's lifespan? Whirlpool is giving us a full refund towards the purchase of the new Kitchen Aid unit which are made by them as well but I'm quite confident that they will be fine... but time will tell and I'm buying extended warranty just in case! If Whirlpool could perfect the unit it's the perfect solution for large families...

Poor quality - not made to last

I bought this refrigerator twice. The first time it lasted just over three years. The second time it lasted a bit over five years. My appliance repair guy claims that it does not pay to service the fridge. I will not be replacing it with the same model again even though I have a matching freezer. (I can't afford to keep on replacing my refrigerator every few years.) Whirlpool's costumer service was also very disappointing.

A nightmare!

Had to buy the sidekick set due to kitchen was built for them. On second set....The refrigerators quit cooling. First one lasted 12 years....Had to live without one for 41 days before it was repaired due to part on back order through a company of poor business with the appliance repairman sent by whirlpool. Diagnosed it As a bad compressor. Took weeks for one to come in then was told carrier broke it had to reorder another one from whirlpool! Finally got the man to come put it on and it's still not cooling up to the temperature it should be. I am so disappointed with the whole mess of fooling with the lazy EZ Appliance Company and Whirlpool who kept me on hold for over an hour almost every time I had to call them. Total nightmare...so discusted with all of this I could cry. Second refrigerator lasted one year 11 days....whirlpool did pay for the repair less service call but now I am going to have to call them back and tell them it's at 53 degrees instead of the 33 degrees it's suppose to run. I will remodel my kitchen before I buy another sidekick refrigerator from them.

Nothing but issues

We purchased both the stand alone freezer and refrigerator as part of a custom designed kitchen in 2013 along with 4 other whirlpool appliances. We had to replace the auto defrost part on both the freezer and the fridge within 2 years - after the warranty expired. In the past 10 months we have had to charge the fridge with gas twice and it still will not maintain a cool temperature. Now we either have to A. replace both so they match, B. have mismatched units in a custom kitchen, or C. re-configure our custom cabinets to accommodate a standard refrigerator freezer. At this point, we have spent over $700 on parts and repair costs on 5 year old appliances.

Great size.... but badly made!

I bought this refrigerator for my business. Only to have to service it 3 months later. It stopped cooling from one day to the next. Unfortunately Whirlpool didn't cover my purchase because it was apparently an old model and it was out of warranty. (Remember I bought it new 3 months ago) I finally got someone to come and check it and the repair man said I had to pay out of pocket for this service because it wasn't under warranty. Yet whirlpool made this appointment for me. Customer service is horrible by the way. In short I finally found a reliable appliance repair man and he said these refrigerator are not good because you can't get to the hoses that may have the leak. He refilled it with the freon and know it cools again. I will have to refill it but unfortunately I can't afford a new refrigerator at the moment.

We purchased both the fridge and freezer in 2013. Both of them had to have the defrost timers replaced within the first 2 years. Now, just like all of the other reviews, the compressor went out in the fridge. Parts alone are over $1,000!! Now the fridge is discontinued and we had custom cabinets built around these appliances. Complete junk. I wish i would have read these reviews before purchasing. I will not purchase another Whirlpool appliance again.

Constantly being worked on

We built our kitchen around the sidekick. After the first 1-1/2 years the fridge or freezer has been worked on every year. Tried contacting Whirlpool but received no response. Now American Home Shield is replacing literally everything in the unit! We bought all whirlpool appliances because of their reputation. So sad that the brand is not what it once was. Too bad the company didn't care to take care of their customers. We are no way 14 years into owning these money pits.

Poor Quality Refrigerator

We purchased a home that has the Whirlpool Refrigerator and Freezer. The Fridge is not 4 years old yet and it needs to be replaced. I contacted Whirlpool as this model has been discontinued so I asked about the newest model. The customer service representative informed me that there is no guarantee that the stainless steel on the new fridge will match our existing freezer. If we want the stainless to match that we would need to replace both appliances that are not 4 years old. I also asked if the door from the old fridge would be interchangeable with the new fridge because we thought we could take the door from our existing fridge and put it on the new one to solve the different stainless steel problem. The customer service representative said that the doors on the old and new fridge will not be interchangeable. It is disappointing that the quality of Whirlpool appliances is no longer what it used to be. For a fridge to be broke and need to be replaced in less than 4 years speaks volumes about the quality. We now need to purchase new appliances and will be avoiding Whirlpool given the quality that we have seen to date.

This is my second review. After the first I was contacted by whirlpool. I missed the phone call and haven't been able to get anyone to call back since. That was 2 months ago. We just sent the refrigerator to repair for the 3rd time in 2 years and now have over $1000 in repairs. This is absolutely ridiculous!! Compressor failed twice

I bought the matching fridge/freezer in 2003 and fridge compressor failed in four years and failed again 4 years later so bought brand new same unit and that compressor failed at two years, paid to have it replaced and it failed again at 4.7 years. No warranty or support from Whirlpool. Looks nice, but complete junk.

Our refrigerator is not even 3 years old and it won't cool anymore. Freon issue within a closed system that is expensive to fix. Recommended to just buy new. No thank you!! An appliance should last longer than 3 years. Plus, I don't want to have to spend the money for a freezer to match. Bad decision buying these in the first place.

2nd time purchasing and both had same problem

We are on our 2nd sidekick set. First was purchased on '07 and we put approx $2K in repairs over 7 years before having to purchase new. We had to purchase the freezer also since they changed the look. Now, we're 4 years in with the new one and we're faced with the exact same problem as the first one. Does not cool and an entire fridge of ruined food and a $1500-$2000 repair bill. The only thing customer service could do is 'discount' a new one that they couldn't even get in stock for me. I would have to find a new one at a retail location and they cannot guarantee the slightly discounted price. Now, we've spent over $8k in repairs and appliances and are at a loss for what to do. This is frustrating beyond belief and we are extremely disdain Ted that the company has not stood behind their product better. We are sort of stuck since our cabinets were built around this piece. Please do your research prior to purchasing and if possible go with a higher end brand to lessen the chances of this continually happening.

Died within 3 years

This was built in to my custom home in the cabinets as a set with my freezer. The compressor on the fridge went out. So many other reviews say them same thing. Its beautiful looking and has worked well up until this weekend when it just suddenly quit. They are super expensive, and since they come in a set to get a new brand and replace both is over $3,000. Trying to decide if I want to fix it or just give up and get something different. Don't buy this one.

ran fine for one years, then got increasingly noisy. quit after 4 years. smaller motor does not mean high efficiency, it just runs more and wear out faster. previous freezerless frig lasted for 20 years, not made anymore so tried whirlpool. would not buy again or recommend.

We are now on second repair trip for this model. Apparently it is Freon issue. $400-800 to fix. Thought about purchasing new one, but that is not an option since it is discontinued. Replacement model is a different size and I have matching freezer☹️.

This refrigerator died after about 11 months. The parts to fix it are no longer available. It was under warranty so Whirpool is offering to buy it back after 45 days without a refrigerator! The problem is we have the matching freezer which is still working. Can't replace just the refrigerator so Whirlpool should also buy back the freezer. I don't know if there are any other units that will fit in space that was customized to fit these units. What a piece of junk!

Extremely disappointed in life of this appliance

In April of 2013 my husband and I purchased the Sidekick Refrigerator EL88TRRWS03 as well as a matching Freezer for our new home. We began to have problems with this refrigerator in August 2015 and to date, we have spent $872.05 on 4 different service calls by an authorized Whirlpool repairman to repair our refrigerator. Not only have we spend a large amount of money but during this time our refrigerator was being serviced we have been WITHOUT a refrigerator for a total of 100 days and it is now no longer working. We purchased the refrigerator and freezer units as a matching pair. The models have now been changed and in order for me to keep a matching pair, I now must replace BOTH units although the freezer continues to work fine. What is even more frustrating is that it appears from reading reviews on this site that this was a KNOWN problem with this appliance. In my opinion, Whirlpool has an obligation to make this right by the consumer. I am contacting the Better Business Bureau. I have had numerous Whirlpool appliances over the years and have always had very, very good service. I am so disappointed with this product.

Terrible quality

When we purchased our home and they had an older model Whirlpool, all refrigerator, which remained when we took possession. It lasted 10 years from new. We replaced it with a new Sidekick in April 2013. By October 2013 we had to replace it AGAIN! Luckily it was under warranty and replaced with another new one. It is now April 2016 and it has died again. I'm so disappointed in the reliability and quality of the product, especially one that cost over $1500 (CDN). I will replace it with another brand if I can find one that fits within our cabinetry.

Super Fridge!

We are really happy with the capacity of this refrigerator! We can put 3-4 pots of left-over food and sauces in it easily. This is very important to us because we have an older kitchen that doesn't fit deep and wide refrigerators. We bought a counter height/depth freezer for our meat and vegetables. This refrigerator looks sleek, and is very quite. I'm only disappointed that after nearly two years, the thermostat broke down and it is slightly freezing our milk and other liquids. Otherwise, when the refrigerator is working properly, it maintains our food at an impressive even temperature from top to bottom. Enjoy!

Spacious

I bought a year ago - I like that it's spacious and fulfills the need of my huge family but just after 14 months I have had to service it where it's compressor stopped working and the gas leaked, so I'd advise to buy an extended warranty with it.

This review is only for installation and aesthetics. We have yet to use it as it is still cooling.We did have a professional appliance installation company install these units with the trim kit.Overall it did not seem like too hard a job to put together the trim set and slide the fridge and freezer into place. However, there was a bit of tweaking to get two separate boxes (the fridge & freezer) and trim kit to all look as one unit. Total time of install start to finish was close to two hours.Here are the various tweaks they had to make while installing:1. Needed to make their own levelers as the units did not have their own. (so, initially the units looked like they were leaning back)2. Lots of adjusting on doors to make sure they were even with one another and still level. Sort of a standard with any fridge install but a little tricker being two different units.3. The center trim kit that goes between the units was keeping the fridge from closing completely - need to assure spacing is accurate between both units from top to bottom.The main thing the installer left me with was that these are two separate units and only connected by a small plate at the top. So, it is possible that we may experience some movement when opening and closing the doors.It would seem that the design should be updated so that there is a bracket in the middle that connects both units.This way you would have a connection that runs the height of the unit keeping an even gap, creating more connection than just the small plate at the top, and would also provide a place to attach the center trim.Overall, it looks great and has met our expectations for the overall look in our kitchen. If you bought or are considering purchasing these items it is because you don't or can't spend 10k+ on a big sub-zero - I don't blame you. If they operate as good as they look, we will be very excited.I do have a small level of concern regarding the negative operational reviews but I'll see what happens with our units. Our cabinets were custom built for these units so it is not an easy change if these go belly up...but lets think positive.Once, my units get to temp and we can start using I will leave an operational review.

Much needed fridge space for office kitchen. We had a smaller fridge, always overfilled with a poorly utilized freezer. This 18 cu ft fridge only was the answe to our issues.

Sidekicks is a Good idea

The choice was dictated by the existing 10 yr old WOODS (Kenmore) refrigerator unit which started to leak, but there were no parts available. Our Kitchen cabinets were designed to accommodate only the sidekick design. The new units work well but there is no easy way to level and align the units once there are in place. There should be a way to adjust the rear from the front. Also they are a little noisier than the previous unit. The look has been improved by the stainless steel handles. Hopefully they can be serviced without moving them.

I bought this fridge two months ago and I like it a lot. Space is good and so is lighting. Down point, a little noisy when it starts and fruit and veggie compartments are a little small.

owned for 2 mos. and still satisfied; specs actually list as 17.7 cu ft; adjustable shelves and large deli box are very good design features; 2 fresh veg and fruits boxes at bottom are adequate, but use the attached shelf for addition fresh veg storage

Dream Sidekicks!

We've wanted sidekicks for 3yrs now and we always said when the fridge goes. Well we couldn't wait any longer so we went for it and we love them. We were thrilled to find them in white; perfect for our key lime green and white color scheme. They are so quite and with the wheels a breeze to move! Sidekicks are also extremely practical because we are only going to get older and with a chest freezer you have to dangle over the side with your feet in the air to get something out of the bottom. That's after you had to dig all the other items you didn't out so you could find it in the first place. With our sidekicks it's fantastic to have a Fridge that can hold so much more and a Freezer where it's easy to find everything and even easier to get to it!

The Right Amount Of Space!

We were remodeling our kitchen and thought it would be an energy saver to have just one refrigerator and one freezer instead of an extra one of each in our garage. We love to cook and freeze meals for times we don't feel like cooking. The Sidekicks are about 1-1/2 times the size of the average refrigerator and freezer and do the trick very nicely. We had an ice maker installed in the freezer so we have plenty of ice. We're not fans of door water/ice dispensers. We love the sound of these units when you close the doors and they're sealing tight. Everything is easy to get to inside. Great value for the money!

I first purchased my refrigerator inAug.2013 and by March of 2014 it broke down and was unable to be repaired. It was after replaced 2.weeks without a refrigerator. The new refrigerator did not work so now I had to wait another week before I could get a replacement delivered. That was in April 2014 it is August 2014 and it is working so far I keep my fingers crossed.

3 failed in 10 years

The Sidekicks line is a terrific idea, but the quality of the refrigerator is poor. I've had 3 refrigerators in 10 years. The last one lasted only 14 months, just out of warrantee. We had the same failures of the cooling system described by many other reviews. I will have to remodel cabinetry in my kitchen, but it would be sheer stupidity to purchase another Sidekicks refrigerator. Why would I think another would last?

Came with the house we purchased, they are new. Really like them. I saw them as we have matching freezer. The freezer has some thing I do not like. First how you can not open it back up right away after just closing it as it seal up. For the price the ice maker should standard and installed. The trim kits to go around both units are way over priced.

6 months out of warrenty it quit working repair man said $1000 to fix and he said it had a slow freon leak from the factory they offered to pay for half the parts but im not putting $700 in to it just to have it happen again.(loved the fridge till all happened)
